Psychosomatic Conversations: Back to the Body – Back to the Body – Emotional Stress and Physical Disturbance – Part 2 of 3
August 2026
This month’s Psychosomatic Conversations explores the relationship between emotional stress and physical disturbance through the everyday experience of bowel movements.
Linda Thackray, Christy Foster and Sean Jago discuss the different ways people experience and carry stress in the body, exploring digestive patterns such as constipation, diarrhoea and sticky poo. They consider how these physical responses may provide valuable clues about underlying emotional patterns, stress responses and unresolved experiences.
Christy shares a client example demonstrating how emotional suppression can be experienced as physical tension in the lower abdomen. Sean explores the body’s natural need to “let life through”, and how early experiences can influence our relationship with safety, holding on and letting go, including patterns of muscle tension in the pelvic area.
The conversation also explores how emotions such as anger, fear and a lack of safety may be reflected in digestive and pelvic symptoms, including constipation, diarrhoea and haemorrhoids. Rather than seeing these symptoms simply as problems to be fixed, the hosts invite us to become curious about what the body may be communicating. They emphasise awareness, safety and connection with the body as pathways to understanding our individual patterns and the relationship between our emotional and physical experiences.
Part 2 of our three-part series exploring psychosomatic conversations and the messages our bodies may be inviting us to hear.
